Bayern Munich has announced the name of Vincent Kompany as the new coach. The German club said the company has signed on as Bayern’s coach for the next three year
This is the former Belgian defender’s third job as a coach. Before that, he was in the dugout of Anderlecht in his country and Burnley in England. Burnley were relegated from the Premier League to the Championship in the season just concluded. However, Bayern brought the company to Munich by compensating Burnley.
The 38-year-old Kompany,
takes over at Bayern when the team has endured its worst season in an era. Bayern did not win the Bundesliga for the first time since 2011. Bayern also failed in the German Super Cup, DFB Pokal and Champions League.
Amidst this failure,
in February Thomas Tuchel and the club agreed to part ways at the end of the season. In the past three months, Bayern have considered a number of candidates for their next coach. In between, Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso, former coach Julian Nagelsmann and Ralf Rangnick refused to agree. Talks of keeping Tukhel for one more season have not progressed too far.
Bayern eventually approached the Burnley coach company. In 2022, the company lifted the team from the Championship League to the Premier League by taking over Burnley. However, in the 2023-24 season, they dropped again to 19th. Bayern also agreed to pay Burnley compensation for the company as the contract runs until 2028. According to ESPN, the amount of compensation is 1 million 27 dollars.
Announcing Kompany’s appointment on the club’s website today, Bayern Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dressen said, “Everyone at our club agrees that Vincent Kompany is the right person as a coach, with whom we want to work.”
The player, who ended his playing career four years ago, expressed his excitement at the responsibility of Germany’s most successful team, saying, “Bayern Munich is an institution in international football, I feel honored to be a part of it.” I will now focus on the fundamentals of football—working with players, building teams. If the foundation is made, success will come.
